W4AVA ACTIVE FROM ARLINGTON COUNTY MOBILE UNIT DURING FIELD DAY
Arlington County Board member Barbara Favola, pictured at left with Dave WA3GIN, visited the site to learn about Amateur
Radio and Field Day. Arlington County police officers and firefighters also stopped by to view the operation.
Gerry N3EVT and his XYL provided lunch for the entire Field Day crew! Gerry then put in many hours of top notch SSB
operating from the ETSU.
More Field Day photos are available in the
Field Day Photo Gallery.

The Simplex Operations & Personal Preparedness Workshop will be held on Tuesday, August 22, 2006 beginning at 7 p.m.
at the Fairfax County Alternate OEM at 12000 Government Center Parkway, Fairfax, Virginia 22035.
The workshop, hosted by the Fairfax County OEM, is open to all Amateur Radio operators from all surrounding jurisdictions.
The workshop is said to be especially important at a time when the possibility of having to use simplex communications

ARPSC HAM VISITS ARRL HEADQUARTERS
Bill Beyer K4WGB recently visited the American Radio Relay League offices and station W1AW in Newington, Connecticut.
Beyer submitted the accompanying photographs.
The photos show the Maxim Memorial Station, W1AW, and some of its many antennas. Call sign W1AW originally belonged to
Hiram P. Maxim, who founded the ARRL in 1914. According to the ARRL, Maxim was an inventor, scientist, writer and
humanitarian. He invented the famous Maxim gun silencer.

WA3GIN HONORED BY SYMANTEC CORPORATION
Internet security leader Symantec Corporation recognized ARPSC Director Dave Jordan WA3GIN in July during an awards
ceremony in Washington, D.C. for government officials involved in web security.
Jordan, Chief Information Security Officer for Arlington County, is responsible for the cyber security infrastructure
and processes that support emergency communications for first-responsder responsibilities to the Pentagon, National
National Airport, and more than 40 other federal agencies. Jordan caught Symantec's eye after he deployed a comprehensive
threat management solution using several Symantec products, which reduced incoming e-mail volume by 80 percent, and saved
Arlington County more than $750,000.
