America’s Early Radio History

| January 11, 2014 | 0 Comments

early_radio_historyWhile surfing the Internet recently for information about the early days of broadcast radio in the Washington, DC, area, we came across this interesting website – United States Early Radio History.

While the website is not amateur radio specific, it provides comprehensive history on, for example, early vacuum tube development (1917-1930), and the expansion of amateur radio after World War One. There’s been an interesting parallel between development of amateur and commercial radio over the years.

Another section of the site provides details about early pioneers in radio.

Early Radio History is a good resource.

Retirement recognition for Dan Gillenwater, K9SLY

| October 16, 2013 | 0 Comments

K9SLY- Dan is one of the founding members of the ARPSC and active supporter of the RACES protocol established in Arlington County Government after 9/11/2001. When the newly appointed RACES Officer for the county issued a request for Civil Emergency Amateur Radio Operator volunteers Dan didn’t have his amateur radio license. Dan was the one of several unlicensed volunteers at the time who immediately began training for the Technician license.

qsl_shackIn a very short time Dan passed his Technician class license and then his General class ticket. Dan has been instrumental in the administration of the ARPSC and RACES for over a decade. Although new to the hobby Dan is a credit to our club and amateur radio actively participating in weekly exercise nets, participating in Field Day and Virginia QSO party and MCM events. Unlike so many who after 9/11 got a Tech License, purchased a hand-held radio and soon stored it in a dresser drawer never to be used until a severe storm warning is issued. Ham Radio is so much more…

Dan was born and raised in Arlington and joined the Arlington Police right out of High School. He spent 25 years with the County, joining in 1988, holding various duties including establishing the first ever dual-trained K9 (officer support/drug detection). His canine partner was nick-named SLY… the inspiration for Dan’s vanity call-sign K9SLY.

The members of the ARPSC congratulate Dan on retirement, thank him for his tireless public service and wish him all the best in his future endeavors.
